What is a Chimera?

I’ve had a lot of people ask me what a chimera is, and how to pronounce it. When I was doing research I came across the term and loved how it could be a combination of two things (like a witch and a spirit) or a mirage, a dream (like a mystical creature). Here’s what I created from the definitions in red below: Chimera in my stories are the ghostly beings that live in the logos (the realm of magic) and only witches can feel and communicate with them. Chimeras usually appear as mist or a transparent being, and witches use them as their link to the magical realm. They can combine with a witch, too. For example Olivia’s chimera familiar is friendly and she allows him to feel mortal sensations through her. Nicole’s chimera, however, possess her against her will and are nasty, perfidious, and very carnal.

chi·me·ra  –  kīˈmi(ə)rə,kə-/   noun: chimera; plural noun: chimeras; noun: chimaera; plural noun: chimaeras; noun: Chimera 1. (in Greek mythology) a fire-breathing female monster with a lion’s head, a goat’s body, and a serpent’s tail. Any mythical animal with parts taken from various animals. 2. a thing that is hoped or wished for but in fact is illusory or impossible to achieve. “the economic sovereignty you claim to defend is a chimera”.  synonyms:  illusion, fantasy, delusion, dream, daydream, pipe dream, figment of the/one’s imagination, castle in the air, mirage. More: “is this great love of hers merely a chimera?”  3. Biology – an organism containing a mixture of genetically different tissues, formed by processes such as fusion of early embryos, grafting, or mutation. A DNA molecule with sequences derived from two or more different organisms, formed by laboratory manipulation.

So there we are… a fantasy creature from a Wikipedia reference.    – Cathleen
